What educators are saying

My students and parents love this resource to help students meet our state standards! I use this at the beginning of EVERY school year...and intermittently as a stamina refresher.
My students loved using this resource. It was perfect to use with small group instruction. I also used it for our Dailey Five.

Included in This Download:

  • posters with the definition of stamina
  • anchor charts with what reading stamina is and is not
  • anchor charts with definitions of what reading with stamina looks like/doesn't look like
  • blank anchor charts for your students to fill in
  • reading goal page
  • graphing pages

How to Use This Pack

  1. Print out the posters or anchor charts you want to use with your students.
  2. Explain to your students what stamina is and why it’s important in reading. Explain to them that reading comprehension is increased when they spend more time with a text. Go over what stamina is and isn’t, as well as real vs. fake reading.
  3. Decide if you want to work on individual or class goals. Then, set a goal for a desired number of minutes. Start with a smaller goal (something like 5-10 minutes) and build up over time.
  4. Give your students time to read quietly in a comfortable place to help build up their stamina. Slowly increase the time they read by 1-5 minutes. Have students track their reading stamina over time. If you print out the tracking sheets at 85%, they will fit perfectly inside a standard-size notebook.
  5. Blank anchor charts are included if you want your students to fill them in with you.

What is Reading Stamina?

Reading stamina is the ability to read for long periods of time without getting tired or distracted.

Why is Reading Stamina Important?

Increased reading stamina has been shown to increase reading comprehension and reading scores overall. If students can read, and stay engaged with, longer pieces of text, they have a better chance at remembering what is happening.
