What educators are saying

My students loved pumpkin math! This was organized well and easy for students to work on in a small group.
My students loved this activity. It took us 2 days to complete. They had fun while learning. I will definitely use again next year!

Description

My students LOVE this fall activity that is packed with estimation, measurement, and data analysis! Students use the scientific method in this pumpkin math and science activity as they explore if any characteristic of a pumpkin (height, weight, or circumference) relates to the number of seeds inside. In cooperative groups, students first estimate the height, weight, circumference, and the number of seeds inside all 4-6 pumpkins. Each group then finds the actual measurements for their given pumpkin and shares their findings with the class. A Pumpkin Graph visual is created as the students gather their data, they write and discuss their conclusions, and they are always curious to find the differences between their estimates and the actual measurements.

This activity takes approximately 90-120 minutes and can be broken easily into a 2-3 day activity. I even bake the pumpkin seeds the following day. My students look forward to eating them as we finish our conclusions and discussion the next day:-)

INCLUDES:

  • 5-page Student Packet with Problem, Research, Hypothesis, Results, and
    Conclusions sections

Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units-whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
