What educators are saying

Students loved this project-based learning and it was a fantastic option for small groups to use while I pulled reteaching groups.
This activity was a great project for the end of the year. They had fun making their zoo while also reviewing math concepts.

Description

Project Based Learning: Zoo Design with Area and Perimeter, Map Skills, and More!

This also includes differentiated activities, math skills, problem solving, aligned with Common Core, and extension activities.

This project is based around the idea of students creating a zoo using their knowledge of area and perimeter, along with many other math (and academic) skills to create a unique learning opportunity that apply to real-life situations.

***THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL for DISTANCE LEARNING***

This resource has the original ZOO PDF and now a second PDF to a file with links to Google Slides Versions of this resource.

Details below.

Students will be required to use checklists, create blue prints, incorporate map skills, and more with this form of project based learning to build their own zoo.

There are two versions of this project to fit higher and lower level learners, while also allowing both to be successful. The key difference is the amount of multiplication and size of the numbers. Students will still be required to apply their knowledge of area, perimeter, and many other skills.

Each student can have their own packet and work at their own rate (or they can do this in groups). Packets can be stapled, bound, or even placed inside cardboard paper to create a design booklet.

There are also extension activities for early finishers that include “zooming in” on habitats and showing a closer view of where the animal lives, creating quizzes for other students based on their design, and creating Animal Informational Guides on animal habitats they created during the zoo design.

Zoo design focuses on many aspects of common core in math (area, perimeter, math facts), text features, writing, and even literacy (when it comes to some of the extension activities).

p6: Bookmarks for Area & Perimeter

p7-24: Zoo Design Packet. This uses 60,000 square units for the zoo. There are more size requirements included for the area and perimeters of buildings and attractions.

p25 & 26: 2nd version directions

p27-45: Zoo Design Packet Version 2: Lower level. Only 600 square units. Students won’t much multiply as high and are allowed to create buildings/exhibits then find all area and perimeters.

p46: Extension Activities

p47-52: Habitats Up Close: Students zoom-in on habitats, rescale, and use math/map skills to create an “up-close” look at a habitat.

p53-54: Zoo Quiz worksheets

p55-59: Habitat Information Guides: Students will research animals from habitats they chose (when they made their zoo). They must research about the animals, provide key details, and create informational guides (text features, map skills, etc). Note: Habitat Information Guides are blank and students will create them themselves. There are no cards with information on animals (all info must be researched by the student).

p60-61: Teacher Rubrics: 2 Varieties
