    Description

    Engage your students throughout the school year with relevant projects where they can apply a variety of skills from math and language arts. Project Based Learning Projects are actually my favorite products to make. This product includes 15 different projects; 4 of which are also in a digital format. Click on each of the individual products to see previews, and read below for more details of what's included.

    Design an Aquarium (A Digital version is also included for use with Google Classroom™)

    Engage your students in a relevant project where they can apply a variety of skills. Skills in this activity:

    *Area

    *Volume of prisms

    *Problem Solving

    *Persuasive Writing

    Giving a Presentation

    Students write a proposal, plan a budget for purchasing fish and tanks, and set up their aquarium model. They purchase gravel and other decorative accessories for the tanks. The project culminates with a poster presentation where students share their plans and complete budget.

    Design a Dog House (A Digital version is also included for use with Google Classroom™

    Students work in teams or individually to design a dog house. A variety of math skills are practiced including area,volume, measurement conversions, addition, subtraction, and multiplication. ELA skills are also integrated as students write persuasive letters and give oral presentations on their creations. Giving students relevant contexts to apply skills is a meaningful way for students to construct conceptual understanding and see a useful application. Appropriate for grades 4-6.

    Operation Decorate

    Students are engaged in planning the holiday decorating of a children's home. A variety of math and language skills are built into this relevant project. This is a great cooperative group activity, or can be done individually. Editable price pages allow you to customize for your students needs. Here's what's included in this experience:

    Activity 1: Descriptive Writing Student reflect on their own experiences and preferences for holiday decorations and write a descriptive paragraph. This will help students with decisions in activity 2.

    Activity 2: Decorations Budget Students use a specific budget to make decisions on which decorations they will purchase.

    Activity 3: How Many Strands?: Students use measurement and conversion skills to calculate the number of light strands they will need.

    Activity 4: That’s A Wrap: Students calculate the volume of different boxes to ensure donated gifts will fit. They also calculate surface area of boxes to make sure they have enough wrapping paper.

    Activity 5: You’re Invited: Students use a budget to plan a reception for the kids living in the children’s home. They also design invitations.

    Activity 6: Group Presentations with Grading Rubric: Teams create and present posters detailing their decoration plans. A optional grading rubric is included.

    Thanksgiving Feast

    Engage your students in this relevant project where they plan a Thanksgiving feast. From calculating serving sizes and calories from real food labels, to making a shopping list and sticking to a budget. This project helps students see the real life uses for a variety of math skills. Editable price tags allow you to differentiate for your students. Activities included in this product:

    Activity 1: Making A Shopping List: Student read real food labels to find serving size on a variety of Thanksgiving dinner foods. They then calculate how many of each item they will need to purchase to feed 20 people.

    Activity 2: Let’s Go Shopping: Students use price information for each item and the quantities they calculated in Activity 1 to figure out the cost of their Thanksgiving Feast.

    Activity 3: Budgeting For Extras: Students use a budget to purchase extra items for Thanksgiving such as candles and napkins.

    Activity 4: Setting The Table: Students use creativity and some geometry skills to come up with different table arrangements to fit 20 people.

    Activity 5: Let’s Get Cookin’: Students use information on cooking times to make sure all items will be ready at the same time.

    Activity 6: Counting Calories: Students use the Food labels to calculate the number of calories for different guests.

    Activity 7: The Beautiful Feast: After all the hard work and planning, students draw a picture of their Thanksgiving Feast.

    Dog Sled Race

    This project allows students to use a variety of math and language skills in a relevant simulation. They will plan, prepare, and race in a Dog Sled Race. Here's a list of the different activities included in this project:

    Activity 1: Your Team: Students create their dog team. They draw pictures of each of their 6 dogs and name them. They also develop a team logo.

    Activity 2: Sled Dog Care: Students read a passage describing the needs of their sled dogs. They follow up by answering questions related to the cost of care.

    Activity 3: Dress For Success: Students calculate their budget for the necessary clothing for dog sled racing.

    Activity 4: Equipment Round Up: Students choose from a variety of equipment they will need and stick to a budget. They also write about their reasons for choosing the items.

    Activity 5: Planning the Route: Students use a trail map and distance chart to plan their route. They answer questions

    Activity 6: Post Cards From the Trail: Students create and write a postcard to a friend describing their adventures on the trail.

    Activity 7: On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!: Students use their time telling skills to answer questions about their race time.

    Activity 8: Photo Finish: Students use measurement conversions to determine the winner of the race.

    The Chocolate Shop

    Just in time for Valentine's Day! Engage your students in a fun relevant project creating and managing a chocolate shop. A variety of skills are used in this project including basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Fractions, percents, and measurement conversions are also used. Students engage in language arts skills as well such as reading direcitons, writing, and creative art. Use this project over the course of a week, individually, partners, or cooperative groups; the possibilities are endless! This activity would also be great for emergency sub plans.

    The Chocolate Shop

    Engage your students in a fun relevant project creating and managing a chocolate shop. A variety of skills are used in this project including basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Fractions, percents, and measurement conversions are also used. Students engage in language arts skills as well such as reading direcitons, writing, and creative art. Use this project over the course of a week, individually, partners, or cooperative groups; the possibilities are endless! This activity would also be great for emergency sub plans.


    Planning an Earth Day Festival

    Engage your students in this fun and relevant project where students plan an Earth Day Festival. Students work to determine a budget for the different activities at the festival and then present their plan and budget to the "city council". Some activities are already proposed, while other activities can be developed by the students. There are many opportunities to apply relevant math and language skills in this engaging project:

    To challenge older students, you can include calculating tax for the items needed for the activities.

    A Day in the LIfe of a Teacher

    This fun project will really let students see some of the hard work teachers go through in preparing for the school year. Students assume the role of a teacher and complete a variety of tasks. Project Based Learning is a great way for students to apply a variety of math and language skills to a relevant scenario.

    Presentation Skills

    This project can be completed in a few days, or over the course of a week or so. This project would also be great for independent work if you need sub plans. Here's a brief summary of the activities incuded with this project:

    Day 1: Supplies, Supplies, Supplies: Students (Teachers) choose supplies for their students from several stores to get the best deals.

    Day 2: A Trip to the Teacher Store: Students use a budget to choose extra items for their classrooms.

    Day 3: Setting up The Classroom: Students choose a classroom theme and design a bulletin board. They also decide how to arrange the desks for 25 students along with the rest of the furniture in the classroom.

    Day 4: Making a Daily Schedule: Students create their daily schedule based on specials and time requirements for different subjects.

    Day 5: Writing a Welcome postcard to students: Students write a welcome postcard.

    Day 7: Preparing posters for presentations: Students create a poster of their work from this project.

    Day 8: Presentations: Optional presentations. (grading rubric included)

    Plan a Fall Festival

    Students will spend several days going through the planning of a fall festival. Using a variety of math and language skills students will plan activities, work with budgets, and plan advertisements. The project culminates with an opportunity for students to present their projects to the class.

    Ideally, this would be a terrific project to apply skills already learned. Concepts and skills covered in this project include:

    Halloween Bake Sale

    Students will spend several days going through the planning of a Halloween Bake Sale. They will use a variety of math skills for budgeting and measurement, and language arts skills for advertising and writing.

    The great thing about this particular project is that you can choose to enact this as a service learning project. Perhaps choose one type of Halloween treat to actually make in class. Then sell them around your school or community and donate profits to a cause of your students’ choice. Many of the treat options do not require any baking, so they can easily be made in the classroom. (Of course, this is an optional use of this product, but relevance is a great tool!) Not to mention the benefit to your community.

    Engage your students in a relevant project with this Holiday Cookie Exchange Project. Students will spend several days going through the planning of a Holiday Cookie Exchange Party. Students will use a variety of math skills for budgeting and problem solving, as well as language arts skills for writing and making an invitation.

    Ideally, this would be a terrific project to apply skills already learned. Concepts and skills covered in this project include:

    Engage your students in a relevant project with this Championship Game Project. (Please note, Super Bowl is trademarked and not authorized for use in commercial products therefore I am using the words Championship Game instead.)

    Students will spend several days going through the planning of a trip to this year's championship game in Atlanta. Students will use a variety of math skills for budgeting and problem solving, as well as language arts skills for writing and giving a presentation.

    Engage your students in a relevant project with this Field Day Project. Students will spend several days going through the planning of a school field day. Students will use a variety of math skills for budgeting and problem solving, as well as language arts skills for writing and giving a presentation.

    Running for President

    Included in this project are a variety of activities all leading to a final campaign budget. Students will design a commercial and budget for advertising. They will also make decisions on which campaign materials to purchase. Creativity is encouraged as students design campaign buttons and decorate the campaign bus. The next part of the project involves the campaign trail across the United States to 10 major cities. Students will use geography skills as well as budget for gas usage as they travel around. A list of restaurants is also included as they calculate the cost for eating on the road. After the final budget is finished, students use presentation skills present a poster of their project to the class, which is supported by a grading rubric.
