What educators are saying

I have been looking for something to help me with teaching poetry in my class. This bundle is amazing.

    Description

Print and Digital! With free optional student instructional video lessons for the alliteration and simile resources! This bundle includes four poetry resources at a discounted price: 1.) Alliteration Pyramid Poem, 2.) Monster Simile Poem, 3.) Biographical and Autobiographical Poems, and 4.) List Poems (3 different kinds). Please see the descriptions of each resource below as well as the preview!

Purchasing this bundle will enable you to download the traditional PDF version of each resource to be printed as well as have access to a digital version to be used with Google Classroom™ or any LMS (through TpT's digital tool, Easel)! I have already prepared a student digital version of each resource for your convenience (deleted teacher pages, added instructions and text boxes for student answers, etc.). But you can also make your own changes (in terms of text boxes, instructions, etc., but note the content of the pages is not editable). For more information about how TpT's digital tool Easel works, please click here! Also check out the preview above for a glimpse of this digital version!

    1.) Alliteration Pyramid Poem

This four-day lesson plan with printables will have your students understanding and writing alliterative sentences, culminating in a fun Alliteration Pyramid Poem! The first two days include an introduction and practice with alliteration. Then the next two days focus on creating the poems. The printables have a completed sample (if needed), and note that a picture book is recommended to kick off one of the days (not included). There are 3 different levels for a final copy of the pyramid poem. The Alliteration Pyramid Poems make use of some parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs), so this activity incorporates a number of skills!

As an optional added bonus, you may also like my free instructional video lessons that teach my alliteration lessons for you! There are 3 videos in the series with student independent practice/activities (from this resource) to be completed between the video sessions. The videos can be found on my YouTube channel (name: Erin Guge; playlist: Poetry Lessons), and a link to the playlist is included in this resource.

    This product includes:

    - Four days of lesson plans, about 30 minutes each for Days 1-3 and a bit longer for Day 4

    - Tips and Variations

    - Alliterative poem for learning about alliteration

    - Whole group alliteration practice and completed sample

    - Alliteration Practice page and completed sample

    - Alliteration Pyramid Poem Introduction page and completed sample

    - Alliteration Pyramid Poem rough draft page (front and back)

    - Final copy pyramid poem pages in 3 levels

    - A completed pyramid poem to be cut out and used as a sample

    2.) Monster Simile Poem

This three-day lesson plan with printables will have your students understanding and writing similes, culminating in a cute monster simile poem! The first day includes an introduction and practice with similes. Then the next two days focus on creating the poem. Each of the printables has an answer key/completed sample. The page used for students to plan their monster/poem comes in two different levels so you can choose which one suits your students best. Also note that three different picture books are recommended to kick off the lesson each day (not included). The monster simile poem final product can either be displayed on a page that is included, or the activity can be taken one step further where students can create their monster out of construction paper and craft materials, and the poem is then glued onto the monster.

As an optional added bonus, you may also like my free instructional video lessons that teach my simile lessons for you! There are 3 videos in the series with student independent practice/activities (from this resource) to be completed between the video sessions. The videos can be found on my YouTube channel (name: Erin Guge; playlist: Poetry Lessons), and a link to the playlist is included in this resource.

    This product includes:

    - Three days of lesson plans, each taking about 30-40 minutes.

    - Simile practice sheet and answer key

    - Monster simile poem planning page in 2 levels and completed samples

    - Monster simile poem final copy page

    - Picture samples of final products

    3.) Biographical and Autobiographical Poems

These Bio Poems have a variety of uses and include tracer templates for a craftivity! This is such a fun way to incorporate poetry by using this purposeful activity that displays information about students and people you study!

The Auto Bio Poem is great for students introducing themselves or sharing information about themselves and can be used at the beginning of the school year, for Parent Night, or when studying the genre of autobiography! The plan page comes in 3 levels (same information but the amount of writing required differs) and includes a sample. The final copy can either be displayed on a page that is included, or the activity can be taken one step further: use the templates included to make tracers (of face, hair, and shirt) on cardstock or thin cardboard (like cereal boxes), so that students can make their face/hair/shirt with the tracers on construction paper, cut out their final copy poem, and glue it on their construction paper shirt! This makes a great display!

The Bio Poem is great for students sharing what they have learned about someone else such as a famous person/historical figure. This works well as a final project when studying these people or when studying the genre of biography. The plan page for the poem includes a sample, and like the Auto Bio Poem, the final copy can either be displayed on a page that is included, or the activity can be taken one step further where students make the person with construction paper and glue their poem on the construction paper shirt! This also makes a great display!

    This product includes:

    - Directions and Tips

    - Auto Bio Poem plan page in 3 levels

    - Auto Bio Poem final copy page

    - Bio Poem plan page

    - Bio Poem final copy page

    - Tracer templates for face, shirt, hair

4.) List Poems (Regular List Poem, Color List Poem, -ing Poem)

These three types of List Poems are an engaging and purposeful way to incorporate poetry and develop fluent brainstorming and categorizing ideas! This activity can be made easier or more challenging depending on the topic chosen.

The List Poem can be used with just about any topic (student choice such as favorite activity or teacher assigned such as a season, holiday, recent field trip, recent special school event, science or social studies topic, a historical figure or famous person, a book, etc.). This can even be used as a simple final project since it displays the most important words about a topic. A plan page with samples and a final copy page are included.

The Color List Poem is a specific variation of a List Poem, where items are listed of a specific color along with an adjective for each item (great for working on adjectives!). A plan page with a sample and a final copy page are included. The final copy can also be taken a step further by using the template included to make a crayon-shaped tracer on cardstock or thin cardboard (like a cereal box), so that students can trace out a “crayon” on construction paper in the color of their poem, cut out their final copy poem, and glue it on their construction paper crayon. This makes a great display!

The –ing Poem is another specific variation of a List Poem, where present tense action verbs are listed that relate to a topic (great for working on verbs!). This can be used with many topics, and like the List Poem above, the topic can be chosen by the students or assigned by the teacher. A plan page with a sample and a final copy page are included. Also included is a variation of the –ing Poem, where students color in/add facial features of themselves on a page with a face and then write –ing verbs that they enjoy doing. This makes a great display for the beginning of the school year and Parent Night.

This resource also includes 12 picture cards and 11 color cards to be used throughout the year as topic prompts for the different poems above (for writing a quick, informal list poem in a writing journal or in a writing center). This again is good practice for fluent brainstorming and categorizing ideas in an engaging way! Sample answers are listed for each card. If desired, cards can be laminated, hole-punched, and placed on a ring.

    This product includes:

    - Directions and Tips for each type of poem

    - List Poem plan page and final copy page

    - Color List Poem plan page and final copy page

    - Crayon tracer template for Color List Poem
