Description

Students will pretend that they are one of many important elements found on the periodic table: carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, iron, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, calcium, sulfur, chlorine, gold, silver, or copper. As one of the most important elements on Earth, students are employees of the World Element Corporation. Due to recent cost increases, the World Element Corporation has been forced to lay off some of its workers.

Students will conduct research on their assigned element and design a presentation for the Executive Board of the World Element Corporation (i.e. the teacher), to defend their position in the company. Students must use facts and illustrations in order to be convincing and to clearly explain the importance of their element's role.

This is a three week lesson that concludes a unit on the Periodic Table. It may take the place of a unit test or be a culminating project that is presented in class.

Detailed questions, rubrics, planning sheets, supplemental materials, and teacher samples are included.
