PASSION PROJECT Genius Hour Independent Project NO PREP

This easy-to-follow, NO PREP resource gives you everything you need to have your students do Passion Projects/Genius Hour/Independent Projects and presentations! It includes 3 Interest Inventories, a 15-page student packet, 5 Pages of Teacher Lesson Plans, 6 Research Options, 2 Rubric Options, and a 22 slide PowerPoint to show students with directions for each day. This resource is entirely editable. You can print the PDFs, or adjust the Word and PowerPoint files to your liking. Simply print out the Student Packet, post the PowerPoint with directions, and GO!

Purpose:

•The purpose of these projects is to allow students to follow their passions while they learn research and long-term planning skills. They also learn to self-assess and reflect on their work. These skills will give them the ability and confidence to pursue projects that interest them in the future.

How to:

•Print the Student Packet out for students.

•Follow this PowerPoint starting on Slide 7. As students finish each day’s assignment, conference with them one-on-one. Once approved, have them continue working on the next page.

•This PowerPoint and the Student Packet can be edited as needed.

Anticipated Length:

•In my class, we work on these projects for 60-75 minutes per day. The planning, research, product creation, and presentation takes approximately 22 class periods. This could be adjusted by taking out the presentation part of the project which would make the project take approximately 13 class periods.

Subject and Grade Level:

•I have successfully used this with 5th-8th graders. It can be used (with some modification) with 3rd or 4th graders as well as high school students.

I have successfully used this to teach students both in person and virtually.

•This can be left wide open where students can learn about any topic they choose. This could work on a “Fun Friday” day or for an enrichment class. I do it with my gifted pull-out students.

•This can also be narrowed down to a category (inventions, famous people, conspiracy theory) or subject-related topic (book in a certain genre, science experiment, historical events, United States travel, etc.)
