What educators are saying

Great resource to use and my students enjoyed it. It was easy to use and helpful to obtain clarification of the concept. Helpful to use with all my students.
My students read Rocket Boys and watched October Sky at the end of the year last year. This was a great movie guide to help them focus on what was going on in the movie, and we used it as a resource to compare and contrast the movie vs. the book afterwards.

Description

This 14 page movie guide with handouts is for the film "October Sky (1999)".

★★ Check out the full preview! ★★

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 – Comprehension questions. I have made three sets of questions for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

• 40 questions requiring full sentence answers.

• 25 questions requiring full sentence answers (15 removed from the 40 question set)

• 24 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers (Q25 requires a full sentence answer)

PART 2 – Creative writing

• Students to write a newspaper article about Homer winning at the National Science Fair. Needs to include a drawing.

• Students to design and label a rocket site similar to the one Homer and his friends had made. They then need to write in detail the setup and a recount of a launch.

PART 3 – Storyboard and Synopsis

• Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to remind them of the sequences

• Synopsis. Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

Based on Homer Hickam's memoir Rocket Boys, the movie follows the true story of Homer in his determination to build and launch his own rocket with the help of three friends. Unfortunately, most of the town and especially Homer's father thinks that they are wasting their time.

How can movies help students learn English?

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
