Nutrition: Identifying Herbs and Spices Presentation with Answer Key, FCS

Whilst teaching Food and Nutrition, one of my favourite topics was herbs and spices. This is taken from my own teaching and was a presentation that the students thoroughly enjoyed. This is a micro-presentation and can be used for students to gain insight into whether or not they are familiar with the common herbs/spices of the world.

DIRECTIONS:

This PDF is a mini lesson that is part of a wider unit on Herbs and spices of the world, corresponding with C3. Flavours of the World: demonstrate an understanding of the characteristic flavours, aromas, herbs, and spices associated with cuisines of various countries/cultures.

1. You may wish to have a discussion with students on their familiarity with using herbs and spices. Guiding questions might include: On a scale of 1-5, how confident are you in your ability to recognize a common herb or spice? Which is your most used herb/spice? Does anyone believe they can tell the two apart?
2. Pull up the PDF - making sure that you are in SLIDESHOW VIEW.
3. Read the introductory slide - helping students define herbs/spices and how to tell them apart.
4. Stop on the slide displaying ‘mystery’ herbs and the slide displaying ‘mystery’ spices. Allow time for students to write down their answers or discuss aloud. Then you may reveal the answer slide.
5. Extension: You may choose to bring herbs and spices in from your own pantry and have students recognize through scent. These could correspond with the herbs and spices from slides or be entirely different.
