Weather Hazard STEM Bundle - Oh no! The family bought property near a fault line and needs an earthquake resistant home. The weather forecast is for dangerously high winds. The family needs a safe place to go. The city is building an observation tower that will be susceptible to lightning and needs a lightning rod. A heavy flood is coming and the house needs a flood barrier. All of these problems need your young student engineers to solve them! This STEM bundle meets many different NGSS standards. The challenges encourage students to use problem solving skills, build a structure using the available supplies and solve a problem. These challenges would perfectly accompany a weather unit or natural hazards unit.
Suggested Plan of Implementation:
Prior Week: Send home the parent letter requesting supplies. Gather needed materials.
Day One – Introduce and discuss “The Problem” slide. Discuss the “Let’s Talk About It – Flooding” slide. Introduce the STEM Challenge.
Day Two – Introduce and discuss the budget options. Use the planning page to illustrate or write out the building idea.
Day Three – “Purchase” supplies for the build. Work on budget. Begin the building process.
Day Four – Work on and complete the structure.
Day Five – Test the structure. Complete the Self-Evaluation Page
This is certainly not the only way to use these materials. They are designed to be flexible and be used to best suit each classroom and teacher based on the ability of the learner, time constraints and teacher preference.
