I created this lesson plan for an U.S. History course with 9th and 10th graders when I needed to teach the reservation system & Dawes Act of the 1880s. Here's how I suggest you use this:

  1. Worksheet on the experiences of Native Americans in the late 1800s FIRST (either as homework the night before or a starter activity)
  2. Notes on Impact on Native Americans in the 1880s
  3. Stations/Carousel Activity on the Dawes Act/Carlisle Indian School Primary Sources

Topics covered: Battle of Little Bighorn, Massacre at Wounded Knee, Indian Wars of the 1800s, westward expansion, Dawes Act, reservation system, cultural assimilation, Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Indian boarding schools, and more!
