Middle School Art Paper Mache! Dazzling Chameleon Sculptures! Grades 5-12

Inspired by the Crafts of Mexico! Easy Paper Mache Chameleon Sculptures! Middle School and High school art students will love this colorful, patterned, and manageable Paper Mache project!

• Student-tested with 7th and 8th art students. They LOVED this project!
• All students, regardless of various ability levels, were able to easily construct these life-size chameleon sculptures!
• This lesson includes resources to include Social Studies, and cross-curricular connections too!
• Aboriginal Dot Painting and dotted Oaxaca Wood Animal Sculptures from Mexico are wonderful inspirations for adding color and texture to the final sculptures!
• Students loved the dazzling effect they could easily achieve by layering dots over vibrant colors! We even used color-shifting paint one year!
• These chameleons could also be painted more simply with blended colors of paint and markers over dried paint as well.
• This lesson's duration was about 12-14 days.
• The tasks required (design, drawing, sculpting, pasting, and painting) varied enough that the students remained actively engaged throughout the entire lesson.
• Materials are economical! Mostly recycled materials are all that is needed to create a lovely, three-dimensional, chameleon masterpiece!
