How many times are students asked to identify the main idea in a reading passage? Almost every reading comprehension worksheet includes questions about finding the main idea or central idea in a text. You would think that students would be masters at identifying the main idea and supporting details by now. However, many students still struggle with this critical reading skill (and many teachers are in search of engaging ways to teach students how to find the main idea).
That’s where this Main Idea Mini-Unit comes in. Filled with main idea passages, engaging reading worksheets, and graphic organizers for finding the main idea and details, this unit will help students become strong readers!
This mini-unit provides numerous opportunities to develop the skill of finding the main idea. Each lesson starts with a fun and engaging activity - Tri-Bond Centers, Building a Main Idea House, and a Cooperative Main Idea Paragraph Activity. Direct instruction on how to find the main idea and supporting details in passages further develop students’ reading comprehension skills. Five original reading passages also help students practice their skills and develop their confidence.
Great News! The student packet is also available as a Google Slides resource for students. In addition to the PDF version, students can complete the packet pages via a file sharing service such as Google Drive, Google Classroom, or in the internet “cloud.” The digital version of the packet is accessible from any computer and allows students to complete their work online.
