What educators are saying
Description
This Truth and Reconciliation activity (about the residential schools and Canada's First Nations) parallels perfectly with Orange Shirt Day. Teach students about the Witness Blanket through texts, comprehension and cloze activities. Actual photos of the Witness Blanket are included. You might opt to display them digitally or use as 8 x 11 posters. Learning about residential schools is a sensitive topic. Therefore, I have included Mindful Minute activities (most with music as an option) for each nonfiction text with a photo. The experience culminates with creating a bulletin board about the Witness Blanket (a collaborative art activity) that results in a thought-provoking display.
Your students will enjoy creating this poster as the collaborative effort unfolds.
Creating the art piece is very easy to do. Each student is given one page/piece of a large mosaic collaboration poster to colour. Once all sheets are coloured and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large multi-coloured mosaic/poster/mural that says, "The Witness Blanket". I've even included a blank Witness Blanket template so students could create their own artwork!
