What educators are saying

This is a great resource for classes with multiple ability levels. Students are engages and links in some ways to my school's English coursework.
My students LOVED doing this project. I did an extensive Harlem Renaissance unit with them. This was a great way to tie the unit all together. My students found it very engaging and really enjoyed doing it.
Also included in
  1. Students LOVE Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes, so here are some projects that will translate that excitement into learning. Bronx Masquerade has been a huge hit with my reluctant readers, so you’ll find lots of differentiation and editability. Have a great Bronx Masquerade unit!✅ Harlem Renaissance

This project is a great introduction to the Harlem Renaissance because students take the lead in this research activity. If your students aren’t quite ready to present in front of the class, you can use small-group presentations or set up a Gallery Walk.

Your Harlem Renaissance activity includes:

  1. Harlem Renaissance PPT Research Project Guidelines (+ editable version in .doc)
  2. List of possible Harlem Renaissance personalities (+ links to possible sources)
  3. Research questions worksheet
  4. Source sheet for recording sources
  5. PPT Checklist (+ editable version)
  6. Rubrics - holistic & analytic (+ editable version)
  7. Presentation Peer & Self Eval slips
  8. MLA Cheat Sheet
  9. Digital version

This Harlem Renaissance project was designed for an 8th grade enrichment class and was completed over five hour-long class periods. No out-of-school work was required. The first set of guidelines follows this time frame. You can give more time on the second version, which has no reference to number of days (you can write those in!) or required number of slides.

I originally used this as an introduction to the Harlem Renaissance before we read Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes. Are you interested in teaching Bronx Masquerade? This product is also part of the Bronx Masquerade Bundle
