Description

The Grade 2, Unit 1: Healthy Eating packet is designed to meet the specific expectations outlined in the 2018 edition of the Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum document. Please note that this packet has been updated as of 02/09/19 and reflects the updated Canada's Food Guide.

Changes Made:

To reflect the updated version of Canada's Food Guide, this packet makes no mention of food groups. Instead, the focus is on establishing healthy eating routines and patterns, and making healthy and informed decisions when it comes to foods. Students are encouraged to include a plant-based diet into their food choices, and much focus is placed on making food choices in relation to the advice provided in Canada's Food Guide.

About the Packet:

This packet introduces students to the information contained within the 2019 edition of Canada’s Food Guide. Through this unit, students explore the nutritional value of foods based on the food guide, and identify what can be done to make meals healthier for our bodies. Students also explore what a healthy food choice is and why it is important to make healthy food choices. Students begin to compare their food choices with the suggestions identified in Canada’s Food Guide. The final portion of this packet has students focus on choosing healthy snacks, and identifying reasons why choosing healthy snacks is important.

Concepts Addressed:

This packet addresses the following concepts:

  • How to use Canada's Food Guide when making food choices.
  • The layout of Canada's Food Guide.
  • How to make healthy food choices.
  • The difference between healthy food choices and sometimes food choices.
