What educators are saying

While I didn't end up using this directly, it was helpful to me when planning the government unit for 3rd grade.
This was a great resource, I did find I had to tweak it to fit my situation, but it provided the foundation for me.

Description

I always dread teaching the branches of government. Understandably students think it is dull and unrelated to their lives, well not anymore! I created this simulation pack to get students up and actively participating in the branches of government. This pack contains the following:

Ten Day Lesson Plan that guides you through the entire simulation step by step using all the resources below.

Eight Page PDF Presentation provides background information on the branches of government with keywords in red for students to write on their Note Taking Graphic Organizer below.

Note Taking Graphic Organizer to use with presentation above.

Five Pages of Worksheets that guide students through the process of running for office, creating their own slogan, campaign poster and speech.

Elections Ballet to be used on election day after students have given speeches and run for their chosen position as president, vice president, cabinet, representative, senator or judge.

Oaths of Office for students in each branch of government to take after being elected.

Eleven Page Duties of Our Class Government Sheets that guide students through the process of completing their governmental duties. The executive branch will meet about class happiness, fairness, health and education. Legislators will solve problems and write bills, justices will read cases and decide on consequences and solutions, citizens will write letters to the legislators and president.

Debating Graphic Organizer for use after bills have been proposed by student legislators.

Three Page PDF Presentation provides background on debating and counter arguments.

Proposed Bills Sheet to be used to vote on bills.

I used this simulation with multiple third grade classes and had amazing results. My students were incredibly motivated and excited to participate and they learned more than they would have if I had just given them definitions and worksheets on the branches of government. This simulation would be appropriate and fun for grades 3rd-6th.
