Description

Focus on figurative language comprehension with this 28-question figurative language assessment and study guide. With this printable or digital skill-based test, you'll easily and thoroughly cover six types of figurative language: metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, idiom, and symbolism.

(Don't miss the rest of my Figurative Language Activities Bundle!)

This resource includes the following digital versions:

  • Google Slides (link in PDF)
  • Easel Activity (link in My Purchases)
  • Easel Assessment (link in My Purchases)

- Part 1 is matching types of figurative language to examples.

- Part 2 is multiple choice (identifying examples, interpreting their meaning, and analyzing their purpose).

- Part 3 is sorting examples into categories.

The 38-question study guide covers the same material, but it gives students more chances to explain meanings and write their own figures of speech, ensuring depth of understanding. I always tell my students that if they can do the study guide, they will have no problem with the test!

It is so important to spend time specifically on figurative language - not mixing it with poetry, story elements, or any other concept until students have a good grasp of the difference between figurative and literal language. I hope these materials help you and your students enjoy the fun of figurative language while strengthening their critical thinking and reading skills!

If you teach figurative language, you need my Figurative Language Activities Bundle. It's time to move past memorizing and start REALLY understanding what things mean!

Don't miss more fun middle school reading resources!
