What educators are saying

This was a great help. Saved me from having to do a burn test in the class room with an open flame and was very engaging for most of the students.
This is a great activity to use for the fibers unit of forensics. I have a large class, so this was great to use with them.

Description

This activity is ready for distance learning!

This is a NO PREP LESSON designed for students to complete a virtual fiber examination lab. Students are tasked with identifying the source of 2 unknown fibers found at a crime scene.

This is a 3-part virtual lab that begins with students making observations on 7 common fiber burn tests. In part 1 of the lab, students observe 2 unknown fabric burn tests and use a dichotomous key to identify the type of fiber the unknowns are made of. In part 2 of the lab, students will open Google Slides that allow them to drag and drop sample fabric swatches to match the fiber’s color stain. Lastly, students will open an index on Google Sheets in order to determine possible sources for the unknown fibers!

The activity includes:

  • Fiber Lab - Student Digital Handout (5 pages)
  • Fiber Lab - Teacher ANSWERS
  • Fiber Stain Examination Google Slides (3 slides)
  • Fiber Sources Index Google Sheet In (1 page)
  • 9 Embedded Fiber Burn Test Videos
