What educators are saying

My students love stations! This type of activity helps me to do more interventions with struggling students.
My favorite part about this was the worked out examples. That allowed many of my students to remember how to factor on their own.

Description

My students always need more practice factoring polynomials. This secondary math classroom activity is a fun way to get students out of their seats and collaborating with each other as they practice. This algebra lesson plan includes worked out solutions of examples to scaffold math instruction for stations #1-6 for students that might need extra guidance. The answer key is included, so this would work well to leave for substitute plans as well.

Prerequisite skills for this task are to know how to factor quadratics and other polynomials. See the targets for each station below.

Station #1: Greatest Common Factor

Station #2: Trinomials with leading coefficient "a" equal to 1

Station #3: Trinomials with leading coefficient "a" not equal to 1

Station #4: Difference of Squares

Station #5: Factoring by Grouping (4 terms)

Station #6: Sum and Difference of Cubes

Station #7: Mix of different types

Station #8: Error Analysis

29 practice problems are included within the stations.

Bonus Pages include 12 more practice problems for early finishers or as a homework assignment.

  • Worked Out Solutions of Examples for Stations #1-6
  • Answer Forms for student work Included
  • Answer Key included

Two sets of stations are included. One set has the stations with practice problems only. The second set has an example at the top of the page to help differentiate for different levels of usage for this resource.

Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For example, see 𝘹⁴ – 𝘺⁴ as (𝘹²)² – (𝘺²)², thus recognizing it as a difference of squares that can be factored as (𝘹² – 𝘺²)(𝘹² + 𝘺²).
