What educators are saying

I used this with my EL students and it was very engaging. It was a fun way for them to practice their English skills, both written and then verbally since I had them say what they wrote outloud.
These photos are so fun and engaging. I use them with Text Features and at the end of the year for a fun writing game.

HOW CAN THESE PUZZLES BE USED?

  • Writing centers, stations, or rotations
  • Review or introduction of quotation marks
  • On days when you are short on time for a writing lesson
  • On days where students have lost focus and you still want to squeeze some writing in
  • In the special education classroom where too many words or images can overwhelm
  • These also could work for Virtual Learning, eLearning, Distant Learning (or Distance Education), e-learning, Online Learning, or Remote Learning situations using the Google Slides© or as part of a packet - some teachers are promoting them in their video calls and asking students to respond in the chat or calling on them individually

TEACHERS WHO HAVE USED THIS RESOURCE HAVE SAID:

  • Great pictures - lots of variation! Student response has been positive and promoted writing engagement!
  • Students loved creating captions for these photos. I would have them put the caption in the chat box on Zoom or I would call on each student individually and they would verbalize their caption. They could not WAIT for me to do "Caption This" during our Zoom meetings. This was like creating memes, except the photo was already provided. They had fun with this. I am so glad I purchased it! It was a part of our morning opening. Every day we had a good laugh because of what they came up with.
  • This is absolutely awesome!!!! I use as my morning writing prompt for my 6th Graders and let them write for 5 minutes then share. I have seen great writing and a lot of creativity! Students love it!
  • I put this in my stations and my kids remind me when I forget to put it up because they love it so much. Great resource!
  • I love the variety in pictures. I cannot wait to have my students work in groups with this!
  • My students love when they get to write about these pictures! And I love having these pictures handy without having to search every time I want to do something like this!
  • I have several reluctant writers, but they love to write about these pictures!
  • I cannot even begin to tell you how funny some of the journals have been! Great resource!
  • This resource is such a fun way to practice writing skills. I used this to really give kids the practice using quotation marks. It became a fan favorite right away!

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

These 50 picture writing prompts are meant to be a fun way to engage students in the writing process when time or attention spans are short. You get 50 different picture writing prompts to choose from with the words "CAPTION IT" on them.

You also get an EDITABLE PowerPoint file so you can type out your own text. This gives you even more options with the 50 prompts included, meaning you could potentially use them multiple times to focus on different types of writing.

You also get a Google Slides© version to help better utilize these picture writing prompts when using distance learning.

These work great for writing centers, on days where your writing time is cut short (late starts and early releases, anyone?), when students have lost focus, or when you want to review or introduce how to appropriately use quotation marks.

In my classroom I used our Interactive Writing Notebooks for students to record their responses. But I have also included three printable options for your needs. Choose to have students write 3, 5, or 10 captions. (This could be for one picture, or you could complete that many during a specific timeframe).

There are not any rubrics included in this download. I would sometimes grade on completion, sometimes focus on a specific skill or goal (vocabulary or punctuation), and othertimes skip the grading. (Because I was laughing too hard at the student responses! Those days I called it a community building.)

Give these a try with your second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth grade classroom or homeschool students. You're sure to bring some fun into the day!
