Description
Students enjoy competing in teams as they review Expressions & Equations. This is a PowerPoint game that is played as a whole class.
READY TO PLAY: Just print the student page for each student, get whiteboards for each group, and you're ready to play! This game projects through PowerPoint.
Try it from the preview:
The preview is a trial showing just one problem - give it a try to see how this game works!
The 16 problems in this game allow students to review:
- Evaluating Expressions
- Simplifying Expressions (Distributing & Combining Like Terms)
- Solving 1 & 2 Step Equations
The way scoring occurs will allow students to also practice
- Operations with Integers
Instructions for Teacher:
- Print the student work page (which can be found toward the end of this PowerPoint) and make a copy for each student in your class.
- Project the activity for students to see (the pumpkins are numbered so the students can tell you which one they choose and you can select it from your own computer or on the screen).
- Place the students into groups/teams (3-4 in each group works best)
- Each group needs one student whiteboard, marker and eraser.
- Designate a place on a classroom whiteboard to track team scores (so everyone can see them).
How the game works:
- Students will do the problem on their papers and decide as a group their answer to write on their white board (if you don’t have student whiteboards you could just check from their papers)
- Once everyone has had an opportunity to write down an answer the teacher will check. (Click the screen to see the answer)
- Each group with the right answer (or maybe just the first few done - you decide) will ”pick their pumpkin.” When the pumpkin is selected the number of points they get will come up on the screen. The points they get can be positive or negative, or it could tell them to multiply or divide their current score by a number. Later in the game it will throw in more twists like “switch scores with another team” or “give 10 of your points to another team.” etc. If they get “BOO!” that means they got scared and go back to zero. The pumpkins are different each round. There are two ways to win – have the highest positive score or the lowest negative score.
