Description

This C.E.R. focuses on using data from an exponential function in a real-world scenario and being able to justify how and why it works.

Teacher Instructions:

Provide the students with the graphic page and answer sheet. Then students will analyze the data set and stake a claim based on the evidence that they see.

Then they will use the answer sheet to organize their thoughts:

  1. Observations: Write what they see in the graphics.
  2. Claim: Write a claim based on what they have observed.
  3. Evidence: Write the factual information from the graphics to help them support their claim.
  4. Reasoning: Write out the explanation based on the logic used to show why you made that claim.

Understand that the graph of an equation in two variables is the set of all its solutions plotted in the coordinate plane, often forming a curve (which could be a line).
Explain why the 𝘹-coordinates of the points where the graphs of the equations 𝘺 = 𝘧(𝘹) and 𝘺 = 𝑔(𝘹) intersect are the solutions of the equation 𝘧(𝘹) = 𝑔(𝘹); find the solutions approximately, e.g., using technology to graph the functions, make tables of values, or find successive approximations. Include cases where 𝘧(𝘹) and/or 𝑔(𝘹) are linear, polynomial, rational, absolute value, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
