Click around this Google Maps Street View field trip to explore locations that showcase the process of weathering and erosion! This activity provides you with a link-embedded reading passage / response sheet to distribute to students. The reading gives students information about each of the following processes of weathering: mechanical (wind, moving water, glacial, ocean waves, ice wedging, organic weathering) and chemical (oxidation, carbonation, organic).
There are 11 total links embedded in the reading passage. Each link uses Google Maps street view to drop students into a 360 degree view of an active weathering or erosion site. The sites are: Bryce Canyon National Park, Timna Park Israel (mushroom rock), Grand Canyon, Australia (root weathering), Irish coast (wave weathering), Arches National Park, Rural Georgia (oxidation), Carlsbad Caverns, Leshan Giant Buddha Statue (acid rain), and Mount Washington (moss / lichen).
The third column of the response sheet asks students to make an observation about where the link took them, and what caused the weathering they saw. Each site is mentioned in the reading passage.
Link to a Google Doc version included in key.
