What educators are saying

I use this with students when they need to 'cool down' during PE or if they don't come with the right footwear.
A total hit with my students! They had a great time conducting research on the athletes of their choice and truly got creative with how they wanted to present their information.

Description

Incorporate diverse voices into your PE or Health classroom. Open your students' eyes to the contributions of Black, Latinx, Native, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities in the world of sports. All listed athletes were alive during at least part of the 20th century, and most of them are still alive today.

This resource includes:

  • A list of more than 325 individuals who have contributed to the world of sports. Each of these individuals falls into at least one group that has been historically underrepresented in their field. Athletes are divided into categories based on the primary sport to which they contributed, including football, basketball, baseball, track and field, swimming, and more. Many of these individuals have a historic claim to fame, such as the first Black American to play in the NHL.
  • A research outline where students can organize information they find about their individual while researching. This outline can be used as a stand-alone graphic organizer or in conjunction with the project choice board.
  • A project choice board which describes 9 creative projects students can complete to share their research about their individual. Projects are largely open-ended and range from audiovisual formats to written pieces to several projects that involve hand-created artwork. Allow your students to choose the project that best fits their personal creative strengths or their athlete's life experiences.
