What educators are saying

Great resource and a different way to take notes. Students were engaged and used their notes to help them with solving problems later.
My students really enjoyed these notes. I needed an additional resource to reteach this material before our end of the year assessment, and this was perfect.

Description

Introduce distributive property and combining like terms to simplify expressions with this Distributive Property Guided Sketch Notes resource. Contains 10 pages total including guided notes, a practice coloring worksheet (color by number), and a real-life math application. It works well as graphic organizers, scaffolded notes, and interactive notebooks. And it's artsy—if your students love color by number, color by code, or sketch notes, they'll love these lessons.

This product is part of the Expressions Bundle: Read, Write, Simplify, Evaluate Expressions! (purchase the bundle for the best deal!).

All the expressions in this activity contain only positive numbers, so students will not need to know negative integers to apply the distributive property or combine like terms to simplify expressions.

Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + 𝘹) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3𝘹; apply the distributive property to the expression 24𝘹 + 18𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4𝘹 + 3𝘺); apply properties of operations to 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 3𝘺.
Identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into them). For example, the expressions 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 and 3𝘺 are equivalent because they name the same number regardless of which number 𝘺 stands for.
