What educators are saying

Excellent materials to use when the curriculum gets too boring. lol! My students always do better with such student friendly designs and easy to follow lessons.
We used this resource on a half day when I didn't have time to teach a full lesson. I had previously taught the skill, so this was a review. The students were engaged and worked well together. The color coding was a nice option, especially for my ELLs.

What does this “Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers” lesson cover?

  • This packet offers multiple pages of scaffolded practice where students are given an improper fraction that they must use division to convert to a mixed number.  To meet all students where they are, the problems get progressively more difficult as the packet progresses.
  • Students are introduced to a color-coding method where they highlight the parts of each division problem and use colors to remember where each component goes in the resulting mixed number.  For example- the quotient becomes the whole number, the divisor becomes the denominator, and the remainder becomes the numerator.

This “Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers” lesson is designed for 4th grade, however it could easily be used as a review for 5th - 8th grade math.  I’ve taught every grade in middle school and never have I ever had a group come to me with a true mastery of mixed numbers & improper fractions.

Let’s face it, fractions are tough!!  You and I both know that if students don’t have a strong foundational understanding of fractions greater than one, they will be on the struggle bus for every math class from here on out.  These 4th grade fractions worksheets are are gift that keeps on giving.  Every subsequent thing you teach will be easier from this point forward!

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (𝘢/𝘣 = 𝘢 ÷ 𝘣). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. For example, interpret 3/4 as the result of dividing 3 by 4, noting that 3/4 multiplied by 4 equals 3, and that when 3 wholes are shared equally among 4 people each person has a share of size 3/4. If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Interpret multiplication as scaling (resizing), by:
