Learning Objective

Students will use context clues to determine the meanings of unknown words. Students will improve reading fluency.

Description

Do your students enjoy reading scripts? Could they benefit from practice activities where they are required to use context clues as they read? This set of five partner plays is perfect for students who would benefit from targeted activities that work toward building reading fluency and using context clues to infer the meaning of a word within a text.

These five partner plays are intended to be used as fluency-building activities that 2nd and 3rd-grade students can read with a partner. It comes with a BONUS context clues worksheet. After reading each script, students are asked to define three or four underlined words in the script.

These scripts require minimal teacher support, thereby allowing teachers to work with other small groups. For teachers who implement reading centers, these plays are perfect. These scripts are also ideal for parents who are looking for fun at-home reading activities that parents and children can read together. If you have a child who is reluctant to read at home, I encourage you to give these scripts a try!

This resource is available in multiple formats. Each teacher gets to choose the format that best meets his/her students' needs. You will choose between the printable partner plays and the paperless version that uses Google Slides. If you choose the printable option, you will have access to versions with color clip art and blackline clip art. Each script is exactly two pages, making it easy to print them back-to-back on a single page.

This set includes five independent scripts. The words that must be defined are written in parentheses):

  • Whitewater Rafting (tardy, perilous, vow, frigid)
  • The Piano Solo (uneasy, solo, famished)
  • Tooth Troubles (weary, harrowing, erupted, extract)
  • New Kid on the Block (bashful, excels, boast)
  • All Dressed Up (dapper, understated, dire)
