Road to the Constitution
American colonists fought a war against Britain. It was know as the Revolutionary War. The American people wanted to be free from the British king and make their own rules.
The Constitution starts with
"We the people".
This means that it is the people who make the rules for our country.
After the battle of Yorktown the British finally gave up.
James Madison knew that free states should have rules on getting along together. Americans were not used to thinking about the other states.
The Constitutional Convention met in Independence Hall.
1n 1787, there was a meeting in Philadelphia. Men from most of the 13 colonies met to write a set of laws they could all agree on.
The Constitution is the Highest Law of the U.S.
It took a whole summer to write the Constitution.
The room was locked and the windows shut until they could find a compromise.
James Madison is called the
"Father of the Constitution"
