What educators are saying

A great resource that aligns with some Manitoba outcomes, but also information information for students to know.
I really loved this. Was an easy, go-to activity and engaging for students. They worked in groups to read and answer questions. Readings were very age appropriate.

Description

This workbook covers the Grade 6 Communities in Canada, Past and Present unit in the NEW Ontario Social Studies 2023 curriculum (Heritage and Identity).

In this workbook, students will learn about various aspects of Canada's history and its diverse communities. The content starts with an exploration of Indigenous communities and their traditional territories, followed by an in-depth look at the interactions between early European settlers and Indigenous peoples. The workbook delves into the significant contributions of different immigrant groups, such as Jewish settlers, Mennonites, Chinese railway workers, South Asian immigrants, and Scandinavian immigrants. Students will also study the impact of industrialization, the World Wars, the experiences of Africville, the Residential Schools in Canada, and the creation of Nunavut.

Additionally, the workbook covers the importance of inclusivity in Canada through discussions on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and UNDRIP. By the end of this workbook, students will have gained a comprehensive understanding of Canada's history, its diverse communities, and the factors that shape its identity.

To support assessment practices, Ontario curriculum expectations are clearly identified on each page. A quiz is included at the end of the workbook.
