Description
HOW DOES THE STICKER CHALLENGE SYSTEM WORK?
A sticker challenge is used as an individual student positive reinforcement system. Students earn stickers for good behavior, work completion, good manners, completed homework, raising hands, being kind, andworking quietly...the options are endless. It's really all about what your students need reinforcement with.
In my classroom, everyone starts as a beginner, and as they earn stickers they move up to the next level.
WHAT ARE THE STICKER CHALLENGE LEVELS?
Below are the levels I chose for my classroom. Next to each level is the number of stickers needed to move to the next level.
- Level 1 // Beginner (5)
- Level 2 // Learner (10)
- Level 3 // Leader (15)
- Level 4 // Rising Star (20)
- Level 5 // Captain (25)
- Level 6 // Specialist (30)
- Level 7 // Superstar (35)
- Level 8 // Mastermind (40)
- Level 9 // Living Legend (45)
- Level 10 // Excellent Expert
- Hall of Fame
HOW DO STUDENTS EARN STICKERS?
Students can earn stickers for pretty much anything.
Because students are only competing against themselves, it's all about growth. Here are few ideas:
- Fact Fluency
- Transitions
- Homework
- Reading Fluency
- Sight Words
- Responsibility (even something as simple as name on papers)
- Behavior
- Showing Kindness
- Tattling
If I notice the class is struggling with transitions, I might tell my students that I'm looking for students who are quick to transition between tasks/centers/etc.
CAN STUDENTS MOVE DOWN A LEVEL?
No. Once a student is at a certain level, they are locked into that level until they move up to the next level.
Students exhibiting behavior(s) that need improvement simply aren't earning stickers. It may take a student longer (more effort) to move to the next level than it did previously.
Remember, students are going to make mistakes, they need opportunities to learn.
Also, this is NOT a clip chart. Students are not reaching "Hall of Fame" by the end of the day, and then starting back at beginner the next.
This is truly a year-long motivation and management tool to keep students motivated.
WHAT HAPPENS ONCE A STUDENT REACHES THE HALL OF FAME?
Once a student reaches the Hall of Fame, they get to have their picture taken, and placed on the Hall of Fame wall.
To keep students motivated even after they've reached the hall of fame, students work on Hall of Fame Challenges and can exchange completed challenges for treasure box, stuffed animal for the day, or another prize of their choosing.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A NEW STUDENT COMES LATER IN THE YEAR?
Students coming in after the first month of school will start on the lowest level that still has students.
For example, if all students in the class are Rising Stars or above, then the new student would begin as a Rising Star.
WHAT DO STUDENTS EARN WHEN THEY MOVE UP A LEVEL?
Really, just the satisfaction of "leveling up."
So far, students haven't earned prizes, and they haven't even asked about a prize.
Everything I've heard from them involves being able to have their picture taken and placed on the Hall of Fame wall.
I love that sticker challenges motivate students to do better and be better rather than just earn a prize.
HOW IS THE STICKER CHALLENGE KIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER STICKER CHALLENGES?
Both versions help teachers focus on the positive rather than the negative.
They're both perfect for helping to create positive classroom management plans and positive classroom environments.
With my other sticker challenges, however, students were completing a sticker challenge for a prize.
Once a sticker challenge was completed, students take it home and got their next sticker challenge. It worked so well, but if was very focused on the prize instead of the process.
With the Sticker Challenge Kit, it's process focused. In fact, there isn't a prize at all, except the satisfaction of knowing improvement was made.
