What educators are saying

We do not currently have a social studies curriculum in our district. This was so engaging for my students and took a lot of pressure off of me to create my own curriculum!
This resource was helpful and engaging for my learners! Thank you for putting the time into creating this!

Description

This unit makes U.S. government more fun to teach and easier for students to understand. There is a PDF pack as well as an editable pack in Google docs.

Part 1

Students will create the symbols of the classroom. This is the fun part. Get kids interested by making them focus on their classroom.

  • They will use Greek and Latin roots to name their classroom.
  • They will design a flag.
  • They will write a motto.
  • They will write an anthem.
  • They will create a seal.
  • They will research an animal and select a symbol.
  • They will learn about landmarks and create one.

Part 2

Students will learn about the government in this section.

  • They will learn about different levels of government (local, state, federal) and learn who are in these positions. They will compare the levels of government to the levels of school leadership.
  • They will learn about the Constitution and Preamble, writing a preamble for your classroom. They will also learn about Amendments.
  • They will learn about their rights and their responsibilities and how some rights also have responsibilities.
  • They will learn about the branches of government and do a simulation.
  • They will learn about checks and balances and do a sort and a simulation to help them understand it more.

Included is a way to hold an election for the Legislative and Judicial branches in your classroom. (The teacher is the executive branch.) The students who are not in these branches of government will be in the cabinet to help the teacher. This way no one is left out of the government!

There is also a template for your students to create an ABC Book of Government.

I believe that students learn social studies best by immersing themselves in it! Check out the preview!
