Description
Perfect for any middle school Civics, American History, or American Government class studying Citizenship, this Bundle is full of articles, activities, and even a board game covering the topics of Civics, Citizenship, the Naturalization Process, and the Duties and Responsibilities of Citizenship!
Compatible with the 2023-2024 Florida State Standards for Middle School Civics:
- Standard 2 SS.7.CG.2: Evaluate the roles, rights, and responsibilities of United States citizens, and determine methods of active participation in society, government and the political system.
- SS.7.CG.2.1: Define the term “citizen,” and identify the constitutional means of becoming a United States citizen
- SS.7.CG.2.2: Differentiate between obligations and responsibilities of United States citizenship, and evaluate their impact on society.
This bundle includes:
1. Who is a Citizen? Article & Review | SS.7.CG.2.1 Defining Citizenship. Students close-read an article introducing the concepts of Civics, Citizenship, the 14th Amendment, Law of Soil and Law of Blood, the Naturalization Process, refugees, and both legal and illegal aliens. They then complete a worksheet that reviews the article, asking about key concepts and vocabulary.
2. Who is a Citizen? Civics & Citizenship Matching Response | SS.7.CG.2.1 Defining Citizenship. Students use what they have learned in the Who is a Citizen? article to complete a matching activity. Reinforcing the concepts of Law of Blood, Law of Soil, the 14th Amendment, and the Naturalization Process, this matching game asks students to analyze photographs, interpret scenarios, and identify vocabulary definitions to complete the chart.
3. Becoming a Citizen | Article and YouTube Video Response for Civics | SS.7.CG.2.1 Defining Citizenship. This enrichment activity requires internet access. Students read a blog post written by a young woman who went through the naturalization process in college; then, they watch a YouTube video where naturalized citizens quiz natural-born citizens on common Citizenship Test questions.
4. Passport to Citizenship | Naturalization Process Scenarios for Civics | SS.7.CG.2.1 Defining Citizenship. Students read various scenarios about people considering citizenship and identify whether or not the person is eligible for naturalization.
5. Pathway to Citizenship Board Game | Naturalization Process Game for Civics! | SS.7.CG.2.1 Defining Citizenship. This is a fun one!! In this Pathway to Citizenship Board Game, students journey through the naturalization process, successfully completing each requirement (proving they're of good moral character, passing a citizenship test, etc.) as they strive for citizenship. Includes a post-game reflection.
6. Civic Duties & Responsibilities | Article & Picture Analysis Activity | SS.7.CG.2.2 Obligations of Citizenship . Questions interspersed throughout this article keep students engaged and paying attention as they are introduced to the Duties and Obligations of every citizen. Includes an activity where students analysis five pictures and determine which Civic Duty they represent.
7. Civic Duty Folder Pass | Civic Obligations Station Activity | SS.7.CG.2.2 Obligations of Citizenship. This is a really fun station activity that dives deeper into each Civic Duty. Each folder covers a different Civic Duty, explaining the duty, its benefits both to the citizen and society, and the potential impact should the duty be neglected. Comes with a response packet that requires the students to figure out the impacts and benefits of each duty as they move through the folders.
8. Civic Duties & Responsibilities | Scenarios & Response | SS.7.CG.2.2 Obligations of Citizenship. This resource includes two different activities. The first is a Civic Duty & Responsibility matching activity, where students cut out 10 scenarios and decide whether they represent an obligation or a responsibility -- then, they identify which duty or responsibility is being described. The second activity is a short response I use as enrichment for students who need an challenge. This 2-question sheet asks students if voting should be made a civic duty instead of an optional responsibility, and asks them to come up with a new civic responsibility they would like to see everyone perform and describe how it would benefit the common good.
9. Citizenship PSA | Civic Duty Activity for Civics & American Government | S.7.CG.2.2 Obligations of Citizenship. A great, creative activity that I use as a culminating project at the end of my Citizenship Unit. Students choose a Civic Duty and create a Public Service Announcement advertising the duty, its impact on society, and its potential benefits. Includes a rubric and sample PSAs.
10. Citizenship Study Guide | One-Page Review for Civics & American Government | SS.7.CG.2.1 Defining Citizenship, SS.7.CG.2.2 Obligations of Citizenship. This is a quick one-page review that I have kids fill out as a study guide before their Unit 1 test. Covers everything mentioned here, from Citizenship to Civic Duties and Responsibilities.
11. Citizenship Differentiated Review for Civics & American Government | SS.7.CG.2.1 Defining Citizenship. This Citizenship review contains 4 possible review sheets leveled by complexity. Students define vocabulary terms, create examples, draw an advertisement for the naturalization process, and answer a short essay reflection on immigration. Worksheets can be given individually to students based on ability or as a packet!
Plus three Reviews:
