All written content within this unit is editable, affording you the flexibility to tailor the resource to suit the specific needs of your students. You have the ability to modify spellings, currency formats, and other details by simply entering text inside the designated text box in the editable PowerPoint file. Overview
This unit comprises of the following activities:
Four tasks that facilitate an understanding of what it means to budget wisely.
➀ My Lucky Week (editable)
Planning expenses with no relation to income. Students get a feel of expenses and work with decimal numbers to calculate total cost.
➁ On a Budget (editable)
Planning expenses in relation to a stipulated income. Students need to determine how to best budget to keep their expenses less than the given income.
➂ Reaching My Goal (editable)
Planning expenses in relation to a given income and achieving a short term goal. Students work out a spending plan to achieve a short-term goal.
➃ My Personal Budget (editable)
Drawing up a personal budget plan on the basis of personal income received and wants. Students determine the feasibility of a budget plan through constructed reflection.
Supplementary Activities
- Creation of Bar Graphs to show differences and comparisons in expenditure for each of the four budgeting activities.
- Making wise choices from the Dream Collection Catalogue to achieve a short term goal.
- Constructive reflection on a budget plan with emphasis on spending patterns.
- Self-assessment, peer assessment and teacher assessment using rubrics as a tool. Choice of two sets of rubrics for each type of assessment are provided. One set has scores allotted to each criteria, while criteria in the other set can be ticked or highlighted.
- Flashcards featuring key mathematical vocabulary when working with planning a financial budget.
- Task sheets feature both colored and blackline versions.
- Booklet cover (2 options) and a poster defining a ‘budget’ (3 options).
Duration
Each of the four activities in this unit is designed to be completed within a time frame of one and a half hours spread across five days. On the fifth day, students have the opportunity to engage in reflective writing and undertake self and peer assessments.
Suggested Use
There is ample scope for the activities in this unit to be differentiated, although I personally believe students who are academically challenged do have the potential to complete all tasks with assistance and must be given the opportunity to be set up for success.
This unit can be administered to small mixed-ability groups, or alternatively used in math centers. I have also used sample work in this unit to be showcased in students’ portfolios, complete with reflections and assessment rubrics.
Usefulness
This unit instructs students in practical budgeting skills relevant to real-life scenarios. Through the activities, students will gain heightened awareness of their spending patterns, facilitating the achievement of short-term, medium-term, or even long-term financial goals.
