Description
This resource is designed to engage students in a study of the literary/historical periods in British Literature. The time periods are Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Romantic, Victorian, and 20th Century.
Each literary/historical period begins with a short background article and a close reading creative task for task 1. Next, tasks 2, 3, and 4 are tasks that engage students with important elements of the historical time period. Task 5 is a “time warp” activity that introduces students to a postcolonial writer to explore Britain’s identity in the world and at home. In all, there are 35 activities.
You can complete these activities together at the beginning of a unit, use them as extended bellringers, turn each activity into a station activity, or use them as a jigsaw activity to name a few. This is an extremely versatile resource!
Please note I’ve read so many sources on how to mark British literature time periods, and they don’t all agree, use different terminology, or they break down the ages more specifically. For the purpose of this workbook, I divided the major periods in a way that is most consistent with secondary textbooks.
This resource includes an editable PowerPoint. The content on the slides are editable so you can tasks and wording to fit the needs of your students. Please note, the clipart and headings are not editable due to copyright permissions.
This resource is ready for print or digital use. A Google Slide digital version is included, and directions are included for downloading it as a PowerPoint.
