What educators are saying

This was a great introduction to our lesson on rests. My students especially loved posing like the different statues. I loved that the music was soft and forced them to quietly listen!

Description

If you want your students to be listening to classical music, learning rhythm, and having fun, then this lesson is for you. In this elementary music lesson, students will learn about Beethoven, analyze Beethoven's 7th Symphony (movement 2), learn about quarter rest, move their bodies along with the classical music, play rhythms along with the piece, and even play instruments! This lesson is perfect for first grade or second grade general music classes.

In this Google Slides activity, students will learn about Beethoven, the symphony, and quarter rest. They will learn a few facts about Beethoven. They will learn what the symphony is. Students will listen to Beethoven's 7th Symphony Movement 2 and answer questions about dynamics, mood, instruments, and more. Then they will move along with the rhythm of the music. Then they will learn about quarter rests, play quarter rests, and even play instruments.

The main movement activity involves the main rhythmic element of the piece. Students will walk to the steady beat. Then they will walk the steady beat and play the rhythm of the piece on their legs. When the quarter rest appears, students will freeze like a statue. They can change the statue each time to make it more fun!

Everything is available in regular and stick notation.

Printable lesson plan PDF (with I can statement, national music standards, materials list, etc) included. Everything for your lesson is included other than instruments.
