What educators are saying

My students love hands on learning. Thank you for helping to make learning fun for the kids and easier for us teachers.
I used this as an assessment for a state standard. It worked well as students identify the main purpose an author had for writing a specific passage through multiple choice and matching questions.

Learning Objective

Students will match each definition to the correct term. After reading a passage, students will identify the author's primary purpose for writing a passage from four multiple-choice options.

Description

Use this author's purpose assessment to check your students' understanding of the following author's purposes: persuade, inform, entertain, explain, and describe. If you already have an assessment in place, you can also use this as a practice worksheet. The assessment format includes matching, short answer, and multiple choice. It includes six short reading passages and six longer reading passages. The assessment consists of three pages with 12 items. I use it to test my students' ability to identify the author's purpose for writing a piece at the end of our author's purpose unit. It is ready for you... just print and go!

This assessment aligns with my other upper elementary author's purpose PIE'ED resources. With this method, students are taught 5 types of author's purpose:

  • persuade
  • inform
  • entertain
  • explain
  • describe

I have found that this closely matches what upper elementary students will encounter on standardized tests.

The author's purpose assessment consists of three sections:

  • Part 1- Students are presented with a writing assignment scenario written in paragraph form. Students must read the paragraph and determine their purpose for writing. This section has a matching format with five items.

  • Part 2- Students read a paragraph about two boys who disagreed about an author's purpose for writing a book. Students analyze the situation and write a paragraph that explains which boy was correct, and why he was correct.

  • Part 3- Students read six short passages. Following each passage, students must answer a multiple-choice question about the author's purpose for writing the paragraph.

An answer key is included for this assessment.

Although I created this to be used as an assessment, it can be used in a variety of ways, of course. You can use it as worksheets that students can do independently, with a partner, or as part of a small group activity. It can also be used as a test prep activity that will give your students a chance to review author's purpose before taking standardized tests.

********This resource is available in FOUR FORMATS:

  1. TRADITIONAL PRINTABLES- Print the PDF and distribute paper copies to your students to complete.
  2. GOOGLE SLIDES ACTIVITY- On page 4 of the PDF, you will find a link to a Google Slides version. It contains 10 slides.
  3. EASEL ASSESSMENT- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading each definition or passage, students select the correct answer from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
  4. TPT EASEL ACTIVITY- With this paperless format, an interactive layer has been added to the original PDF! Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each definition or passage and select their answers. This activity includes a matching section, a short-answer question, and multiple-choice questions. Students select their answers by moving the circle or typing in the answer box.

This assessment is also available in a digital format. If you are interested in viewing the DIGITAL SELF-CHECKING VERSION OF THIS ASSESSMENT that is compatible with GOOGLE FORMS, click here.
