What educators are saying

Used as a center! My students were very engaged! Practicing skill while giving a break from technology and pencil and paper.
This was a great resource for my students. It allowed them to do something a little different than normal.

Description

Engage students in working with sequences! They observe sequences and examine patterns as sequence doctors! They determine the type (arithmetic, geometric, or neither), write the explicit and recursive formulas using function notation, and diagnose the 5th and 20th term.

Some sequences are simple, and some are very challenging. A Fibonacci sequence is also included. This activity is sure to engage students in working with sequences!

Idea for Implementation:

Doctors (students) visit each sequence and fill out their reports individually. Then doctors meet as a group to discuss and agree on the diagnosis!

Each sequence is provide in PDF format and in a PowerPoint. The PDF can be printed so that sequences are spread around the room or handed to groups. Or, the PowerPoint can be used to display each sequence on the board. The 12 sequences are the same in both formats.

Answer keys are included at the end.

Recognize that sequences are functions, sometimes defined recursively, whose domain is a subset of the integers. For example, the Fibonacci sequence is defined recursively by 𝘧(0) = 𝘧(1) = 1, 𝘧(𝘯+1) = 𝘧(𝘯) + 𝘧(𝘯-1) for 𝘯 greater than or equal to 1.
Write arithmetic and geometric sequences both recursively and with an explicit formula, use them to model situations, and translate between the two forms.
