Ancient Rome: Twelve Tables of Roman Law Using Classroom as Courtroom

This is my favorite lesson for teaching about Ancient Rome, and it's the favorite of many other teachers as well. You receive a four-six hour unit plan for studying ancient Roman law through engagement and interaction between the teacher and the class and classmates themselves.

More importantly, it is a complete set of plans for active and exciting learning that involves creating a mock Roman courtroom in your classroom (based on historical fact) and judging up to THREE real court trials from ancient Rome left to us in writing by Roman scholars.

Included are an introduction and background facts on the Roman legal system, clear and complete teacher instructions for running the courtroom activities, clear learning goals and objectives for your students which can easily be assessed afterwards, and recently added: photocopiable packets to hand out to each class member to work on as the case(s) progresses.

As mentioned, there are three separate court cases and packets provided for each individual case; you decide how many you want to use, although if your students are like mine they will want to do them all!
