Lesson 1 - Early Blues

This lesson is the first lesson (week 1) in our 18-week full-semester course - American Music History.

Our American Music History Course explores the timeline of American music in the context of American history as students gain an appreciation for American music and a contextual understanding of our diverse cultural history.

In Lesson 1 - Early Blues, students trace the history of American music from the fields of the Mississippi Delta and learn about field hollers, work songs, call-and-response, and spirituals.

This is a content-rich lesson that engages students as they develop an understanding of American music and cultural history. I have taught this course in person in a middle school setting and the online version of this course has been utilized by teachers and high school students in several public charter schools in California and homeschoolers. Students love this course!
