    All follow-up activities are thoughtfully aligned to the ELA Common Core for Grades 2-5. Reading levels on the passages range from Grade Level Equivalents of 2 to 5.5.

    WHAT'S INCLUDED:

    2 Vocabulary Preview Charts (2 Options):

    Option 1 - Terms only: You can discuss with students what each word means as you help support them in creating a picture and student-friendly definition on the board as a class.

    Option 2 – Terms, Definition, and Picture filled in: Simply pass out the filled in vocabulary guide and review with students.

    *Vocabulary does build in order of insects*

    3 Differentiated Reading Passages: Range from Grade Level Equivalents of 2 to 5. All passages’ grade level equivalents are listed in the Table of Contents.

    Finding Text Evidence (2 Options):

    In the first option, students use crayons to color code text evidence. In the second option, students can also write answers to each question.

    Caption It & Headings Match Up: Students use what they have learned from the passage to match captions with their appropriate images. They also give each section of the text a heading (physical description, habitat, diet, defenses, or life cycle).

    Graphic Organizers (2 Options):

    Students sort information from the passage into either a 3-2-1 Nonfiction graphic organizer or into 2.) categories including insect’s life cycle, physical description, defenses, habitat, and diet.

    Using Text Features: Caption It! & Headings Match-Up (cut and paste activity)

    Vocabulary Crossword: Crossword provides independent vocabulary reinforcement after reading and seeing the words in context.

    Label It! Students use a word bank to label 8 parts of each insect (some body parts vary, depending on the insect).

    Interactive Graphic Organizer: Cut, glue, fold and write! This is a fun 2-page interactive organizer for students to use to show comprehension of the text. Two back page (fill-ins) options are included.

    Compare & Contrast: (4 total) Venn diagrams comparing 2 ocean animals.

    All About Insects” Book:

    This is a way for students to show their comprehension from each passage while practicing their summarizing skills. You can have students write about an insect after reading, or as a culminating activity after reading all of the passages.
