Accountable Talk Stems

Accountable Talk is purposeful conversation that fosters a respectful learning community and deepens understanding. It harnesses the communication already happening in your classroom, increases academic rigor, and creates a specific culture of collaboration that values the depth of someone's thought.

The accountable talk norms can be used at the beginning of the year to set expectations in your classroom as you begin to increase the quality of conversation between your students.

The talking stems can be posted in your classroom and available to students at tables, desks, and small groups to help guide their discussion (specifically in the beginning of the year as it becomes natural for your students.) The talking stems help put words to thinking for introverted students and guide thoughts for extroverted students to prevent over sharing.

Evidence Sentence Starters
Discussion Leader Prompts (both listening and questioning)
Conversation Starters
