What educators are saying

Wow! I work at a Visual and Performing Arts School, and this was the focus of one of our grade levels Artist of the Month. We all must duplicate some of the art ideas with our student artists, and this was exactly what I needed! The whole package was perfect!
This Australian Aboriginal dot painting is fantastic! The students are engaged and it is wonderful. Also, it's so original!!

Description

This à la cART lesson introduces students to Australian Aboriginal dot art. They will learn about Aboriginal people, draw and color an Australian animal, glue it to a background and dot paint around it.

Art Techniques

  • drawing
  • dot painting

You will Receive

  • 46-page, noneditable PDF
  • grade levels 1 to 10 (mostly used with grade 3 to 8)
  • a single class (60 minute) duration art project
  • an introduction script to read aloud with questions to engage students
  • step-by-step instructions with photos
  • learning objectives
  • gallery of student work
  • common core art standards
  • printable early finishers activities

Materials Needed

I design à la cART lessons to be completed with simple art supplies as it is difficult enough trying to cart materials from one classroom to another.

Approximate Time Needed

This art project is perfect for elementary and middle grade students. The time needed will depend on the age group of your students but usually takes approximately 45 - 60 minutes for the read-aloud introduction, art lesson and clean up. Add more time for optional extension activities.

Read Aloud Introduction

You do NOT need any art and / or art history knowledge to teach à la cART lessons – it is all laid out for you. The read-aloud introduction introduces the artist and explains art movement and techniques pertinent to the lesson; with questions guiding student conversation.

Reference Materials

I like using visuals to support my lessons. Due to copyright infringement, the art pieces are not always included but I have listed the artist and title of the artwork. You can do a Google image search and then share with the class by projecting on a smartboard or whiteboard.

Common Core Art Standards

(4.VA:Cr2.1.4a) Explore and invent art-making techniques and approaches.

(4.VA:Cn10.1.4a) Create works of art that reflect community cultural traditions.

Perfect for grades 1 – 10, homeschooling
