ASL to Written English- School Supplies Unit

Exposure to language is extremely important to our Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children. Building vocabulary concept is a must!

This unit helps the student understand about School Supplies.

Adapted Books-

There are 3 different levels of adapted books. Each students have different needs so you can choose the one that fits the students the most.

- Matching: this is a beginning level for student to learn about each items and the words associated to it.

-Noun and Verb: You can teach noun and Verb to help teach them how their ASL can change to English. This has 3 different pieces- sign with no words, sign with words, and English word.

-Subject-Verb-Object: Some students learns better using S-V-O so therefore this is an option for you to use. This has 3 different pieces- sign with no words, sign with words, and English word.

Sentence Reference-

There are two different level that you can use to teach sentence.

-Noun and Verb:

-Subject-Verb-Object

Some students learns better with Noun-Verb concept others learns better with S-V-O again you will have to figure which level works best for your students. This is a reference sentence to show students how it works.

Sentence Strips Cards-

You cut the pieces and use a pocket chart and work on each word as part of your vocabulary lesson and show how it is put together to create a sentence. Match the vocabulary words with pictures.

Student Mini Books- (only in black and white)

There are 4 different types of students books in this session. You can choose which one matches the student's needs.

-cut and paste book: this is a perfect homework for the student to take home and cut the pieces both sign and English version on the page.

-Noun and Verb- Read the book using ASL in Noun and Verb and show how it is changed into the correct English Version.

-Subject-Verb-Object: Read the book using S-V-O concept to show the student how ASL is changed to Written English.

-English Version- Student will feel confidence that they can read the book without Sign support on the page.

Teacher Assessment-

This is a great way for teacher to do assessment to find out what the student understands and what they will need work on.

-ASL Vocabulary matching worksheet: Student will match the sign with the correct English words.

-ASL Vocabulary Assessment: understanding where the child is on matching, receptive skills and expressive skill with their signing abilities.

-ASL reading running record: using Teacher Version book and have the student read the book and teacher can follow and record their score on the sheet.

-ASL Reading Comprehension: Student will answer question related to the book they just read.
